Wasn’t the best weather for it but she ran flawlessly all the way home! 1972 MG Midget with a whopping 40 some horsepower but tons of fun.
Anyone know what the grippiest 155/80r13 available is? I’m looking for new tires and not seeing many good options and I’m not the best at deciphering.
Also want to do an oil change and spark plugs, not sure where to go since moss motors is closed due to Covid. Anyone have any experience getting MG parts?
I’m happy to finally have a sports car back in my life, ever since I lost my clown shoe in an accident. This thing already has a wonderful 2” exhaust, hi flow headers, engine was rebuilt about 5k ago.
Has electronic ignition, not sure what that means tbh but I’ve ordered up the MG manual and I’m ready to start learning.
Anyways hope y’all are staying safe! Just wanted to share some joy

Sweet! I love little British cars. Electronics aside, they look like a hoot!

Beautiful! I had a 79 Midget back in high school. I miss that car!
Give the front suspension a thorough going over if you haven’t already. One of my lower A-arms cracked at the pivot point. Scared the crap out of me! Fortunately I was doing about 5mph pulling out of a parking lot, so no major damage. We had to get it welded because a replacement part was cost prohibitive back in ‘87. :)

Awesome ! I've wanted one of these for years, electronic ignition probably means it's been converted from points, which is good. It means it'll rev better, start easier and require less maintenance.

This car is extremely light. I wouldn’t worry about getting the most grip from the tires. It’s probably better to look at wet performance. You may not plan on driving much in wet weather, but if you do get stuck in the rain, you will need good tires. The suspension, steering, lack of ABS and no ESC means that you risk sliding around a lot in the rain.
The electronic ignition is probably just a simple system in the distributor where an angular sensor and simple electronic system replace the points.

That looks like a blast. Congrats on the purchase! I’ve always had a soft spot for MG’s.

Love those cars! Bring it up to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix if that’s still a thing this year.

Will definitely have it all checked out. Luckily the dude before me was pretty thorough, had over $11000 in receipts. New paint job last year, though he never had it cut and buffed so I will be having that done professionally by my buddy because it’s too perfect to not have polished and coated. This is the first car I’ve ever had with perfect paint so I want to do my best to preserve it.

Would love to. I’d also love to take it to some historic hill climbs!

The tires are from 06 and I had a couple unexpected burnouts from a stop in the wet today lol. The only reason I ask about grippiest is that all the options seem like very cheap all seasons so since the bar is very low I want the best of the crap haha. Probably spend about 200$ on a set based on what I’m seeing. I plan on a lot of spirited drives as well

Super cool!

Very awesome! You should have some 65 hp as you have the same 1275 my Sprite has.

Congrats! I had fun with my old rubber bumper MGB, I still look for them on occasion. I’d totally go with a Midget, or an MGB GT would be fun too.

Oh, I’ve driven one of those. At 6’2” it was a little interesting to get in and out, but MAN what a blast to drive it.

Everything I’ve read says about 55hp. Has a Weber carb so idk how that affects things, and a nice free flowing exhaust. I’ve read dual SU carbs are the best way for power and period correct so I may look into those. Also moss motors sells some upgraded street camshafts that I think could be a sweet addition

Congratulations! I am jealous. I’ve been miata shopping for months now have to confess I’ve been sorely tempted several times since different original cars come up frequently as suggestions . Enjoy yours el f! =)

You could try The Roadster Factory, I’ve bought a lot of stuff for the TR6 from them. Once you get the hang of how their online catalog works it’s pretty good.

You seem to be right, how odd, must have been due to more emissions . If it is a down draft Weber, there will be a stutter usually from take off, for that the SUs are superior, but if you are making any big power then Weber side drafts are usually the go to.

Khumo Solus is popular choice for most British cars.

If that’s got the later spin-on oil filter, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one, assuming you deal with a parts house that has old-car data. IIRC it’s a common filter, but it’s been 20+ years so I don’t recall which one.
The chassis goes back to 1958, so any radial you put on will be miles better than what it was designed for.
These engines respond very well to mods, but to get the most out of them you want to do some head porting. Pick up a copy of David Vizard’s book Tuning the BMC A-Series Engine . Probably out of print, but it’s the Bible. Twin SUs is the way to go if you get them in good condition and properly tuned.
There’s a jillion things you can do to those cars, but the most rewarding is driving. And with less traffic these days, you don’t need to fear the SUV plague.

Ah makes sense what the little stutter is then. By big power do you mean supercharging, or doing an engine rebuild with upgraded specs?
Very excited to start learning more about these little British cars

I ordered the MG factory midget handbook, I’ll look into that one as well.
Driving is definitely what I’m looking forward to most, I really wanted to find one that was in good condition and ready to cruise with just a little tinkering.
I have a loud screechy noise that just started after two hours of driving and was still there when I took it around the block, I’m thinking I should check the diff fluid and top it off. There’s some oil spots on my driveway haha but I knew that was coming

Ooo, that is an awesome little thing! Looks mean with the black details and bumper delete too!

Id love to return the wheels to the original alloy color, but the bumper delete has grown on me already a lot.

Yeah, I’m no sure on the wheels...I do love them in silver, but they look cool in black!

Well Superchargers are nice, but I more meant better head, cam, etc.
These are fun little cars and I need to get my project finished.
